The straight answer

Lake Bonnet spreads across 79 acres but averages only 4 feet deep, and it sits in the Hillsborough River watershed, not the Peace River and Saddle Creek watershed that holds Lake Somerset and Lake Hollingsworth. Lakeland Concrete Co is the concrete contractor for Lake Bonnet homes in Lakeland, pouring driveways, patios, walks and slabs, starting with a free on-site estimate.

Lake Bonnet at a glance

A 79-acre private lake averaging 4 feet deep in the Hillsborough River watershed, with 168-acre Bonnet Springs Park on its east shore.

Shoreline work on this private lake still starts with the City, and truck access from W. Memorial Blvd or George Jenkins Blvd shapes pour day. Base conditions get checked lot by lot.

Permit office: City of Lakeland Building Inspection Division · official page Inside city limits: driveways through Building Inspection with Public Works Engineering inspecting; aprons need a Right-of-Way Use Permit; work at the water starts with Lakes and Stormwater. Confirm your parcel is in the city first.

Wide, shallow water in the Hillsborough River watershed

The Polk County Water Atlas lists Lake Bonnet at 79 acres with a mean depth of 4 feet and a deepest point of 13, holding roughly 99.7 million gallons. Compare Lake Somerset, which is smaller at 45 acres but averages 8 feet. The Atlas classes Lake Bonnet as private, and it tracks the water through 14 quality sampling locations and 2 hydrologic stations, with records starting in January 2007.

On a lot that backs onto shallow water, the edge of the yard is where the concrete questions land: how close a patio can come, whether a walk can reach a dock, and where the rain off a new slab ends up. Lakeland Concrete Co pours driveways, patios, walks and slabs for owners around the lake, and we sort those edge questions out before we price anything.

Private lake, City permit: work at the Lake Bonnet shore

Owning the shoreline does not take the City out of it. Lakeland's lakeshore residents page says City permits are required for shoreline projects, and it names other agencies that may want their own: the Florida DEP Southwest District, the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The page draws no line between public and private lakes, so a seawall cap, a dock landing or a patio that runs to the water on Lake Bonnet starts with the Lakes and Stormwater Division. That assumes your parcel is inside Lakeland city limits, so confirm it first; in unincorporated Polk County, the County's Building Division handles permits.

Here is how we handle that on a quote. The yard side of the job, such as a patio near the house or a walk across the lawn, gets priced and scheduled on its own. The piece at the water gets listed separately and waits until you have the City's answer. That keeps a shoreline question from holding up a driveway that never needed it.

The same City page tells lakeshore owners that what they do on land has a direct impact on their lake's water quality. On a lake that averages 4 feet, we take that seriously: the slab sheds water toward the lawn, not off a hard edge into the lake, and downspouts that would empty onto the new concrete get moved first. The lake section of our Lakeland concrete permit guide covers the full approval order.

What It Costs

Our typical ranges for jobs around Lake Bonnet. Truck access, the carry to the back yard and any shoreline piece set the final number.

JobPer sq ftTypical projectWhat moves the price
Concrete driveway$8 to $14$5,000 to $10,0004 to 5 in. broom finish, about 500 to 700 sq ft; tear-out adds $2 to $4 per sq ft
Concrete patio$8 to $14$2,500 to $6,500About 250 to 450 sq ft; carry distance from the truck
Sidewalk or walkway$8 to $14$1,500 to $4,5004 in., 3 to 5 ft wide; short runs hit a job minimum
Stamped and decorative$14 to $24$5,000 to $16,000Pattern, integral or release color, sealer
Slab or foundation$7 to $12$2,000 to $7,5004 in. reinforced; thicker or monolithic priced higher

These are ranges. A 12 by 20 foot shed pad is 240 sq ft, which at our slab rate is about $1,680 at the low end and $2,880 at the high end, before any job minimum. Your firm number comes in a free written estimate after we see the site.

Bonnet Springs Park and the old railyard next door

On the east side of the lake, between W. Memorial Blvd and George Jenkins Blvd, sits Bonnet Springs Park: 168 free public acres with a nature center, trails, gardens, playgrounds and a tram. The park's own history page says the land was the city's largest railyard, which connected communities, cities and states for nearly a century before it closed in the early 1980s. Environmental remediation there began in 2019, and the park was designed with Sasaki.

That history belongs to the park's land, not to every yard on the lake. What sits under your driveway is a question for your own lot, so we answer it on site. We look at the cracks and low spots in your current concrete, probe the base where we dig out an old slab, and replace and compact any soft pockets we hit. If you have a survey, an inspection report or a soil report from when you bought the house, bring it. It saves guesswork on both sides.

Getting a truck in off Memorial or George Jenkins

A ready-mix truck is long, heavy and does not turn tight. For homes on streets that come off W. Memorial Blvd or George Jenkins Blvd, we ask at the estimate which way a truck can reach your driveway, whether a low branch or a parked car narrows the street, and how far the chute or a wheelbarrow has to travel to a back patio. A long carry to the back yard can add labor time, and that shows up in the quote line by line, not as a surprise later.

At the curb, the apron sits in city right-of-way and needs a Right-of-Way Use Permit from Public Works Engineering on top of the driveway permit; the permit guide explains both. Note the width of your current apron and whether a public sidewalk crosses it. If the old driveway is coming out, tear-out adds $2 to $4 per sq ft to our driveway rate, and a full replacement can pass $5,000, the contract amount at which Florida law has the building department collect a copy of the recorded Notice of Commencement before the first inspection. Lake Bonnet is not one of Lakeland's seven local historic districts, so the Certificate of Review step does not apply.

Patios, stamped finishes and shed slabs behind a Lake Bonnet home

Back-yard work here can be a patio facing the water, a walk from the house to the lawn, or a pad for a shed. A patio of about 250 to 450 sq ft falls in our $2,500 to $6,500 project range with a plain or broom finish. We pitch it away from the house, stop it short of the shore and cut control joints no more than 10 feet apart on a 4-inch slab, a quarter of the depth, so cracks follow lines we picked.

For pattern and color, stamped concrete is priced on its own because color, release agent and sealer add steps. Concrete Network says stamped surfaces need cleaning and resealing every 2 to 3 years, which we write into the care notes you get. A shed or workshop pad follows the building that sits on it, so the structure decides the permit; our slab page covers that path. If a live oak shades the spot, UF/IFAS warns that its roots can lift and crack nearby pavement, so we lay the slab around the big roots instead of over them.

Common Questions

Lake Bonnet is private. Do I still need a City permit for concrete at the shore?
Yes, if your lot is inside Lakeland city limits. The City of Lakeland says its permits are required for shoreline projects, and its lakeshore page does not exempt private lakes. Lake Bonnet is classed as private by the Polk County Water Atlas, but a seawall cap, dock landing or patio at the water still starts with the Lakes and Stormwater Division. We price the yard side of the job separately so it can move ahead while you wait.
Which agencies besides the City can weigh in on Lake Bonnet shoreline work?
The City's lakeshore residents page names the Florida DEP Southwest District, the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as agencies that may require their own permits. Ask the City's Lakes and Stormwater Division first, since its page lists contacts for each of them, and bring that answer to the estimate so we can quote the shoreline piece.
Does living next to Bonnet Springs Park change my concrete job?
The park's land was the old Lakeland railyard, and its remediation began in 2019, but that history belongs to the park parcel. Your driveway or patio goes through the same City permit path as any other Lakeland lot. What we check on site is your own ground: cracks, low spots and the base under the old slab. Truck access off W. Memorial Blvd or George Jenkins Blvd matters more day to day.
How do you keep runoff out of a shallow lake like Lake Bonnet?
We pitch the slab away from the house and stop it short of the shore, so rain lands on a strip of lawn and soaks in instead of sheeting off a hard edge. Downspouts that would empty onto the new concrete get moved first. The City reminds lakeshore owners that what they do on land affects their lake's water quality, and Lake Bonnet averages only 4 feet deep.
What would a back patio at a Lake Bonnet home cost?
Our patio rate is $8 to $14 per sq ft, and a plain or broom finish patio of about 250 to 450 sq ft typically runs $2,500 to $6,500. A long carry from the street to the back yard, extra grading toward the water and a stamped finish push it up. A free written estimate after we see the site gives you the firm figure.
Do I need a City permit for a new driveway near Bonnet Springs Park?
If your address is inside Lakeland city limits, yes: the Building Inspection Division processes residential driveways and Public Works Engineering inspects them, with a pre-construction notice before work starts. The apron at the street adds a Right-of-Way Use Permit. A full replacement can pass $5,000, so plan on filing a copy of a recorded Notice of Commencement before the first inspection too. Our permit guide lays out the order.
